The Fort Moultrie flag flew over the fortifications on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina during a British invasion early in the Revolutionary War.  America's victory handed Britain a decisive loss and damaged their ability to launch a Southern invasion.  The word Liberty reflected the Colonists ultimate goal.
